Netflix will be releasing a new show that focuses on corruption within the global food system next year.

Rotten – a six-part series that debuts on January 5 – will ‘dive deep into the food production underworld to expose the corruption, waste and real dangers behind your everyday eating habits’.

A spokesperson for the streaming service says: “Rotten gives food the true crime treatment…In a world where huge global supply-chains are increasingly intertwined and consolidated, this series starts on your dinner plate… and follows the money to the shocking consequences – intended or not – of regulation, innovation and greed.”

‘Assault’

According to the trailer: “The food industry is under full scale assault.

“The crisis is global – more of us are wanting to know the source of the food we buy.

“In the last 50 years food has turned into a commodity to be traded like a stock or a bond.

“If you eat food – this is an issue you have to be worries about.”

Episodes

The series is produced by produced by Zero Point Zero – which also created Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown and The Mind of a Chef.

According to promotional materials for the show, episodes include Lawyers, Guns and Honey, which explores a scam known as ‘Honeygate’, The Peanut Problem, looking at the rise in allergies, and Garlic Breath, which is described as ‘a David-and-Goliath tale of loyalty, betrayal and revenge on the American garlic scene’.

Big Bird looks at chicken farming, Milk Money looks at how dairy farmers are turning to producing potentially deadly ‘raw unpasteurized milk’ in an attempt to boost profits, and Cod is Dead looks at criminal exploitation within the fishing industry.
